What drains a car battery when the car is off?

What drains a car battery when the car is off?

1) Leaving lights on is the most common cause of battery drain Leaving your headlights or parking lights on all night will completely drain your car battery by the next morning. A short drive is not long enough to fully recharge your battery. The best way to bring your battery back to full charge is with a real battery charger that has a reconditioning mode. The reconditioning mode will dissolve the sulfation crystals that formed when it discharged. 2) Computer parasitic battery drain is the second most common cause Computer modules draw power when they’re running. When you shut the vehicle down, the modules are programmed to enter sleep mode after a set period of time. At that point, all the modules in your car should draw less than 50-milliamps. With that small current draw, your car battery can maintain its starting power for around 4-6 weeks, depending on its condition. However, if your battery is old, that 50-millamp draw can drain it i ... read more

The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is on! What should I do?

The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is on! What should I do?

Check engine light on! Inside view of catalytic converter with melted ceramic structure There are two types of check engine lights: solid and flashing. A solid check engine light, in most cases, is something fairly simple. As long as the engine is starting, accelerating and the transmission is shifting normally, you can continue driving it. Make an appointment at a reputable shop to have it checked out. If you have a flashing check engine light, you should pull over and get it towed If you see a flashing check engine light, your engine has a serious misfire issue that is harmful enough to damage your catalytic converter. If you back off the pedal and the flashing stops, you can limp to the nearest shop and get it checked out. But if you can’t get the flashing check engine light to stay steady, you should pull over and call a tow truck. What can happen if you keep driving with a flashing check engine light? 7 Reasons Why Your Manual Key Won’t Unlock the Car Door

7 Reasons Why Your Manual Key Won’t Unlock the Car Door

Imagine being late to a meeting or for class only to find out you’re doomed because your car won’t unlock with the key or fob. Here are seven potential causes why your key can’t open the door. The Lock Tailpiece Is Broken Several locking mechanisms use the same principles. Similar to the conventional door lock, most car locks also have a tailpiece that can get damaged over time. The lock tailpiece connects the key to the lock latch or bolt. This is usually found in locks that have a lazy cam. The tailpiece moves approximately 90 degrees around its attachment point to move the cam and linkage. It also brings the key back to the key-pull position without altering the latch settings. The Lock Cylinder Is Damaged After some time, dirt and corrosion could damage the parts of the door lock cylinder, which could explain why the manual key can’t unlock the door. After some time, dirt and corrosion could damage the parts of the ... read more

Is it Safe to Drive with the Gas Light On? FACT or MYTH?

Is it Safe to Drive with the Gas Light On? FACT or MYTH?

The claim that driving with a quarter or less fuel in your car is a myth. While this might have been true in the past, it’s debatable if these claims hold up in modern times. As technology advances and improves, so too does the quality of vehicles and their components. Modern fuel pumps are more resistant to corrosion, and the fuel they transfer keeps them cooled and lubricated. So long as there’s fuel in the tank, even if it is less than a quarter of the way filled, your fuel pumps will function properly. While driving with low fuel reserves isn’t going to damage your car, driving with an empty or near-empty tank will. Being low on fuel is not a problem you want to have, especially since it comes with a lot of risks. Driving with an empty gas tank can damage various parts, namely the fuel filters, the fuel pump, and the engine. Faulty Fuel Filters If your fuel filter is damaged, your gas tank is more likely to collect dirt over time. The debris u ... read more
